Cherokee Woman Recounts First Lady's Visit

Michelle Obama's message to fight childhood obesity resonates with Waleska's Jane Strickland.

Among the parents and dignitaries at Michelle Obama's speech in Alpharetta on Wednesday was a woman from Cherokee County.

Waleska's Jane Strickland said at least 4,000 people attended the event at , where the first lady marked the first anniversary of her Let's Move campaign to reduce childhood obesity.

"Everybody was just really excited to see her and hear what she had to say," said Strickland, who works in Alpharetta and attends North Point.

She heard about the first lady's visit when Andy Stanley, the church's senior pastor, mentioned it during services Sunday. She was able to reserve a ticket online.

Obama spoke for about 20 minutes on how parents can get involved in the Let's Move initiative. North Point was one of two stops she made in metro Atlanta. She also visited East Atlanta Village's Burgess-Peterson Academy.

Strickland said she feels Let's Move is relevant to adults.

"If it affects children," she said, "it affects all of us."
