DUI Court Gets $31K Lift

Find out what's coming up on Canton-Sixes Patch today and what you might have missed overnight.

1. The Governor's Office of Highway Safety has awarded $31,700 to the Cherokee County DUI/Drug Treatment Court, a program intended to reduce alcohol- and/or drug-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Cherokee County. "This is not a diversion program," executive director Lynn Epps said in a statement. "It is a post adjudication program making the impaired driver accountable for his or her actions." Participants must attend 90 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in 90 days and agree to two hours each week of group counseling, periodic individual counseling, daily call in for random alcohol and/or drug testing, court twice each month, probation twice each month and home visits to check for presence of drugs and/or alcohol.

2. Did you wonder what was going on Thursday morning when you saw the white Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit trucks at front of the River Ridge at Canton apartment community? Calls and emails to GBI spokesman John Bankhead and Cherokee County District Attorney Garry Moss yielded very little. "Just doing some followup work," Moss said in an email to Canton-Sixes Patch. River Ridge, you may recall, is where Jorelys Rivera lived and died.

3. A number of places will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Canton-Sixes Patch will have a partial list of closings at 8 a.m. When the list goes live, feel free to add other closings in the comments box at the bottom of that file.
