Canton to Renew Permit to Catch Speeders

The Canton Police Department needs to renew its permit to operate speeding detection devices on city streets and state routes.

The Canton City Council tonight will consider applying to the state to renew the police department's speed detection device permit used to catch motorists driving too fast on streets and state highways.

The council will consider the measure during its meeting, which gets underway at 6 p.m. at Canton City Hall.

The Canton Police Department's permit will expire on Dec. 31 and, upon council approval, will submit to the Georgia Department of Public Safety a list of streets they plan to use the radars.

The list includes many streets in the city's jurisdictions and state highways that also fall under the city's boundaries, such as Interstate 575, S. R. 20, S. R. 140 and S. R. 5 Business.

A full list of the roads are listed in the .PDF attached to the article.

The council will also:

  • Consider transferring $10,000 to Public Works Department for maintenance and delivery of mobile stage for 2014.
  • Recommendation for bid award and authorization for mayor to sign construction contract for Brown Park restroom facilities.
  • Authorize extension of RiverMill Livable Centers Initiative and mayor's signing of resolution.
  • Recommendation for bid award and authorization for mayor to sign contract with Atkins for Etowah River Park to Heritage Park boardwalk construction design.
  • Recommendation to authorize reimbursement to Waste Management one year for overpayment of franchise fees.
  • Hear an update on the Etowah River Park.
  • Discuss stage rental policy.
  • Resolution to adopt the updated five-year short term work plan and annual updated capital improvements element.
  • Designate Shaw Hankins as the city's health insurance broker.
