Canton To Discuss Proposed City Manager Contract

The Canton City Council on Monday will hold a special called meeting to discuss a proposed contract for the city manager position.

The Canton City Council on Monday will hold a special called meeting to adjourn into executive session where it will discuss personnel matters relating to its vacant city manager position.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. June 30 and will be held at the library at Canton City Hall. The Council will discuss a proposed contract for the position, which became vacant in early January with the resignation of former manager Scott Wood.

The council has under consideration whether it will name interim City Manager and Councilman Glen Cummins to the position on a permanent basis. Cummins has been serving on an interim basis since mid-January.

If approved, Cummins, who took office in 2012, would have to resign his Ward 3 council seat to become city manager.

According to the city's charter, if he were to resign before Jan 1, 2015, the city would have to call a special election.

Cummins is the second finalist announced in the last three months for the position. In March, Mayor Gene Hobgood announced former Main Street Woodstock Director Billy Peppers was the city's sole finalist for the role.

However, Peppers' nomination did not have the backing of the majority of the council, and he withdrew his name from consideration. After Peppers withdrew is name as finalist, Cummins then submitted his name to be considered for the post.

Cummins is being paid no more $10,000 per month as compensation for the duties. On Tuesday, a resident filed a complaint with Mayor Hobgood, alleging the interim manager is using his power for personal gain.

The council is set to vote during its July 3 meeting on whether to give Cummins that position permanently.
