Canton Slashes Non-Voting Meetings

The Canton City Council will now have two meetings per month in which they can take action.

The Canton City Council last week voted to change its meeting policy eliminating its monthly work sessions.

The Cherokee Tribune reports the council on Thursday voted 5-1, with councilman Glen Cummins opposing, to do away with its non-voting meetings, which were reserved for the first Thursday of each month.

The council, which meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Thursdays of each month, will now classify both of its meetings as voting meetings.

By comparison:

  • The Woodstock City Council holds regular voting meetings on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. It reserves the third Monday of each month as work sessions or, if needed, special called meetings.
  • The Holly Springs City Council meets the first and third Monday of the month. The council holds a work session during the first Monday, and sets voting meetings for the third Monday of the week. However, the council holds a work session on the third Monday before its regular voting meeting.
  • Both the Ball Ground and Waleska city councils only meet once a month: Ball Ground the second Thursdays of the month and Waleska the first Monday of the month.
  • The Cherokee County Commission, which meets the first and third Tuesday of the month, holds non-voting work sessions 3 p.m. before each of its meetings.
The Cherokee County School Board also meets on either the first or third Thursday of the month, depending on the time of year. The board also holds hour-long work sessions before meetings to hear updates on topics of interest.

The Canton council also voted to unanimously change the speed limit on Bluffs Parkway near the Cherokee County Administration Building from 35 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour.

The change came at the request of Cherokee County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens.
