Canton Set to Move on Subpar Streets

The Canton City Council on Thursday is set to approve a contract with a company to inspect substandard subdivision streets.

The Canton City Council could move forward with a plan to correct some of the development mishaps that occurred during the heyday of the city's growth.

The council on Thursday will consider approving an agreement with Stantec to review the city's development approval process. The council will consider the proposed contract during its meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at Canton City Hall.

Stantec is proposing to evaluate the city's subdivision approval process and any bonds issued associated with the construction of streets, which would cost $16,400.

The city in the last 18 months has discovered many of the bonds issued to build subdivision streets have expired, thus leaving several subdivisions with streets that never received the top asphalt coating.

The company's work will include a maximum of 12 subdivisions. Community Development Director Ken Patton said 73 streets in the Great Sky, River Green, Towne Mill, Laurel Canyon, Norton Lake, Park Village subdivisions are part of the proposal.

Patton said the review can take between four and six weeks.

Stantec will review the development process of those neighborhoods. It will also visually inspect each street and, along with cost estimates, prioritize a list of streets that need to be complete.

Along with the report, Stantec writes it will recommend what action the city should take moving forward.
