Budget Amendment, Building Permits Top Council Agenda

The Canton Fire Department might get a $20,000 infusion to help pay firefighters' salaries.

The Canton City Council will look to shift some money to the fire department ad discuss an issue related to building permits during their meeting Thursday evening at City Hall.

A budget amendment under consideration would see $20,000 transferred from the contingency fund to the city's fire department for firefighter wages. The budget was approved last month without millage rate increases, but water and sewage rates have been bumped up.

Councilman Glen Cummins has proposed a motion that would bar building permits for planned residential areas with roads that have not been completed and are in an unsuitable condition for traffic.

If the new motion passes, until these roads are accepted by the city for maintenance, or if a "performance bond in a sufficient amount guaranteeing such completion has been posted," permits will not be issued.

The city will also consider approving a stipulated sum agreement with Georgia Power that in the amount of $34,957.80 that would allow the city to construct the Main Street Pedestrian Corridor.

Please see the attached council agenda for complete details on the meeting.

The Canton City Council meeting will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday. If you are unable to attend the meeting in person, Canton-Sixes Patch will host a live stream of the proceedings.
