A Day Off to Serve

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday. Find out what's closed as well as how you can honor the civil rights icon's legacy through volunteerism.

The following places—some among Cherokee County's largest employers—will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

While some of us will use the day off to rest, did you know that Coretta Scott King, the wife of the slain civil rights icon, went before Congress in 1994 to make the federal holiday a national day of service?

According to The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, President Bill Clinton signed the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday and Service Act that same year, a move that expanded the mission of the holiday to include community service.
