546 Cast Early Votes

And that's "higher than usual for the city of Canton," the county's elections supervisor said.

With two days left before the end of the , only 4.64 percent of Canton's registered voters have cast a ballot.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 546 of the 11,746 people on the roll had voted since Oct. 17, the day early voting began, Supervisor Janet Munda told Canton-Sixes Patch. Another 96 individuals had requested mail-in ballots.

"It is higher than usual for the city of Canton," Munda said.

During the last municipal election in 2009, Canton had 11,046 registered voters. Of that number, 465 voted early. Another 39 requested mail-in ballots.

Early voting closes at 5 p.m. Friday.

Election day is Nov. 8, and polls will open at 7 a.m. Canton voters will vote for mayor, three city council positions and a at . Depending on their county precincts, they'll have to drive to one of five locations—, , , or Univeter—to vote on county issues.

Only voters assigned to can cast city and county ballots at the same location.

Asked why people have to to drive to two locations to vote instead of one, Munda said, "it's two different elections."

County voters will be asked if they want to renew an and if they're in favor of from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Like Canton, that puts the latter issue in the voters' hands.

A number of Georgia municipalities took similar action earlier this year after Gov. Nathan Deal signed legislation that allows counties and cities to vote on Sunday alcohol sales.

Restaurants in many places already allow sales by the drink on Sundays. The measure, if approved by voters, would allow alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores. Currently, that's prohibited.
