UPDATE: Water Main Break Repaired, Boil Water Advisory Begins

Residents in the areas affected by the water main break must boil their water until further notice.

UPDATE (1:10 p.m.): The "substantial" water main break at the intersection of Highway 140 and the Reinhardt College Parkway Connector which occurred early Friday morning has been repaired.

Mayor Gene Hobgood told Patch that water service has been restored to the area, but there is a boil water advisory in effect until further notice. See the map attached to this article to see the extent of the advisory.

The mayor said that Bartow Paving is working to repair the damage done to one lane of Highway 140 by the water main break and subsequent repair work. Once the roadway is repaired, things should return to normal.

UPDATE (8:45 a.m.): 
There has been a "substantial" water main break at the intersection of Highway 140 and the Reinhardt College Parkway Connector.

Mayor Gene Hobgood told Patch that City Manager Scott Wood was first contacted about the break at around 6:30 a.m., and has visited the scene.

Wood told the mayor that crews are still working to stop the flow of water. 

At this time, it remains unclear as to when the situation will be resolved. It will be at least a few more hours, says the mayor.

Once the water main is back under control, residents in the affected area can expect a boil water advisory until the water main is deemed safe for human consumption again.

ORIGINAL STORY (8:10 a.m.): 
The Canton Police Department and the Cherokee Sheriff's Office are responding to a water main break in the City of Canton.

According to the Canton Fire Department, the broken water main is located at the intersection of Highway 140 and Reinhardt College Parkway. One lane of traffic has been shut down due to the break.

Authorities are asking drivers to avoid this area if at all possible.
