BridgeMill Suspect Back in Cherokee

Authorities on Thursday said that Melvin Floyd would return to Canton "within the next week," but he was booked in the county jail that afternoon.

Authorities on Thursday afternoon said that 22-year-old Melvin Floyd would return to Cherokee County "within the next week" on charges of kidnapping with serious bodily injury, aggravated assault and battery.

But less than two hours after making that statement, Floyd was in the , Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the , said in an email to Canton-Sixes Patch

"Floyd was booked into our jail at 3 p.m. yesterday," he said.

Sunday, the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office in Alabama pulled over the car that Floyd was driving and found Lyndon Baines Smith, 46, of Alabama, in the trunk.

He was transported to a hospital with multiple facial and rib fractures, while Floyd was taken into custody in Cleburne County.

Alabama authorities told the Cherokee Sheriff's Office that they believed the beating occurred at a home in the BridgeMill subdivision, where Smith's relatives and acquaintances live.

Evidence inside the home at 4140 Gold Mill Ridge confirmed that.

More arrests are possible as investigators believe "others were present when the attack occurred," Baker said. 

Floyd's first court appearance will likely come on Saturday, he said.
