Sheriff: Error in Search for Jorelys

Deputies will be disciplined over mistakes, according to a WSB-TV report.

While a sheriff's deputy will be disciplined for a mistake in the search for Jorelys Rivera, a trainee won't be, the now says.

A press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today at the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office headquarters to announce the disciplinary actions taken against the deputy.

During a check of vacant apartments for slain 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera, a deputy and a trainee cleared what authorities later said was the crime scene, according to a WSB-TV report.

Sheriff Roger Garrison told the station that both officials will be disciplined after they failed to tell someone that they saw what looked like a small amount of blood inside one unit.

Jorelys, a first-grader, was . The spearheaded the search, but did not call in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Child Abduction Response Team until Dec. 4. That team joined the search at 7 a.m. Dec. 5. Within hours, authorities  in a Dumpster from the apartment. An autopsy found that she likely died 60 to 90 minutes after she disappeared. Jorelys had been , GBI director Vernon Keenan said during a Dec. 6 press conference.

The next day, law enforcement arrested , a 20-year-old River Ridge maintenance worker who Keenan said had access to the trash compactor. He remains in isolation in the on charges of murder and making false statements. A date for his arraignment has not been set.

Cherokee County District Attorney Garry Moss' office is expected to file additional charges against Brunn in the "near future," Keenan said last Wednesday.

As of this morning, no new charges had been filed, an official at the Cherokee County Magistrate Court said.

After a public , a candlelight and a public in Canton on Friday and Saturday, Jorelys' body was flown to her native Puerto Rico, where she was buried Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
