Robbery Suspect Killed in I-75 Chase

All southbound lanes were closed for hours near the North Marietta Parkway exit Sunday after a law enforcement pursuit that began in Woodstock.

A suspect who allegedly robbed a Woodstock convenience store Sunday morning was shot and killed by police on Interstate 75 near the North Marietta Parkway, leaving southbound traffic jammed for most of Sunday afternoon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the unnamed suspect led Cobb and Cherokee law enforcement on a chase from a Marathon station on Bells Ferry Road in Woodstock and down I-75, to just south of the North Marietta Parkway.

Police stopped the vehicle there, and the suspect aimed his gun at officers, who shot and killed him, according to the AJC report, which was based on a statement issued by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Southbound I-75 traffic was halted at the North Marietta Parkway around 11 a.m., according to an alert issued by Marietta Police, who warned motorists that the closure would be for "an indefinite period."

Various traffic reports during the I-75 closure indicated the backup went as far north as Kennesaw, five miles away. Only the left shoulder was open for traffic to pass.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, all lanes were reopened to traffic, but authorities said delays would continue into Sunday evening as the Georgia Bureau of Investigation continued its investigation of the matter.

According to both the AJC and 11 Alive, Woodstock Police got a call about an armed robbery at the Marathon station shortly before 10 a.m. and pursued the suspect southbound on I-575.

The pursuit then entered Cobb and involved law enforcement from both counties as it continued on I-75.
