Official Was There When Family Found Body

But supporters of a Cherokee County man said Lumpkin County authorities could have been more aggressive in their search for 27-year-old Joey Holloway.

Supporters of over the weekend said authorities didn't try hard enough during the search for 27-year-old Joey Holloway.

On the Canton-Sixes Patch message board, people who identified themselves as relatives and longtime friends said the family's pleas for help were brushed off by authorities who profiled Holloway based on his past, which included recent arrests in Bartow and Cherokee Counties on theft and burglary-related charges.

They said Lumpkin County officials interrogated Holloway's wife and assumed her husband left the campsite on Forest Service Road 28-1 off Camp Wahsega Road so he could plan a burglary.

Holloway, family and friends said, would never leave his family behind.

They said authorities suspended their search, leaving them with no other choice but to search for Holloway themselves.

Today, the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office addressed some of the charges leveled against the agency.

Lt. Wesley Burnett, the spokesman, said the local deputy fire chief was on the scene when a family member found Holloway's body at 1:27 p.m. Saturday. Preliminary findings indicate , he said.

In a statement just released to Canton-Sixes Patch, Burnett had this to share:

In a case such as Mr. Holloway’s, we (Sheriff’s Office) assist the Lumpkin County Emergency Management (Fire/Rescue/EMS) in searching. If at any point criminal activity is suspected or believed to be afoot, the Sheriff’s Office assumes control/command of the search. When a deceased person is located, the Sheriff’s Office is notified and responds to ensure criminal activity has not taken place. The coroner’s office is also notified and responds.

Lumpkin County Communications received the call from Ms. Holloway on June 8 at approximately 6:49pm reporting that her husband had went for a walk 12 hours earlier and had not returned.

The sheriff’s office arrived at the location at approximately 7:57pm, after Fire/Rescue personnel were already on scene. It was after 4:30am on June 9 when Sheriff’s Office personnel left the scene (campsite), but still remained in the area for a while.

The deceased was located by a family member around 1:27pm on June 9. Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived back on scene at 1:47pm. (The Deputy Fire Chief was on scene when the deceased was located.) Our Criminal Investigations Division responded to the location, as they do in most all deaths, to ensure the death was not a result of criminal activity. The deceased was then turned over to the Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is being conducted, no results currently, and an investigation is pending.

Next time they need to listen to the family we know him better then they do! They were no help at all! They went the other way with the k9 dogs. If they would have listened they could have saved us a lot of tragedy from his own family members finding him like that. One of the fire chief had just pulled up and was telling us we didn't need to pass out missing flyers and not to search right after he said that his body was found! He went fishing just like the family members told them and they insisted walking the road. Also no service at all in there.

If you would like a well written story you should interview the family. We were there searching for him along with one volunteer firefighter on Saturday because the Lumpkin County Police Department called off the search. The police said they would not waste the manpower because they assumed joey ran off or was up to no good when he really was just up the creek fishing. He did not deserve to be judged like this by the police, they did not follow proper protocol for a missing person because they judged him by his record when he really was in trouble and needed our help. Why must you publish his past faults, we have all done things we are not proud of. We are all human and make mistakes. At least Joey was kicking back and relaxing while fishing when he went. He had such a good heart and did not deserve all of the slander, he is gone now so please let him rest in peace

My condolences on your loss...and I do have some compassion for the troubled seeking help...BUT, was this guy seeking to get back on the righteous living track, or looking for more easy money next time out?
Let's all remember one thing: we're measured by what people say when we aren't around. This guy died known as a thief, multiple charges and other mayhem: Multiple theft charges in the Clayton community in Cherokee County still unresolved; involved (with his wife) in possessing stolen goods from Bartow County thefts; his single car wreck with three kids in the car cost tens of thousand of dollars in EMT-, helicopter-, police-, and hospital costs. How does your daughter crack her skull if she's in a child safety seat? Will we get this Waleska crash investigation resolved since he's dead? Lumpkin County had several residents, including homes south of FS 28-1, find their jewelry stolen recently. It's in the Crime Reports in the current issue of the Dahlonega Nugget that reported this 'missing person' story. Holloway was fencing stolen jewelry. Just kicking back in the woods, or more? Ironic either way. Good hunches by Lumpkin Sheriff's office--they read the DNR enforcement reports and know that not all campers are in the woods as a family outing, and a fair number are felons, or wanted, and armed. Read 'em yourself online. Spare us the sanctimonious 'show some respect for the dead [felon]' bit. I HATE thieves, and have family in Clayton community and Lumpkin County.

If the friends and family want to do the sanctimonious bit about 'show respect, don't judge' and all that we was 'profiled' stuff--pay up first. Cherokee, Bartow, and Lumpkin citizens have had lots of unrecoverable expenses--tens of thousands of dollars forced on their people, and thousands stolen from some--because of this man. Maybe the bondsman can keep whatever is put up for the last $59,000 bail, but as for me, I'm still upset my taxes took a hit having to deal with this.
Anyone want to speculate on how these 'forced entry by kicking in the door' types react when they find your wife, mother, daughter, dog, or you at home? Profiles are efficient for a reason--stealing is the gateway to other felonies. I don't believe it's moral to shoot someone over a property theft, but I'm not stupid--having grow up around thieves like this. If I'm on the jury of the homeowner that shoots such a felon, they get an apology for their legal troubles, and walk proudly from the courtroom. Will the family reimburse society for their costly sociopath? We want to know, otherwise go away, and apologize to those who have been harmed.

You need to go express your feelings somewhere else! This man (my brother) may have done things that weren't right. but that's between him and god. Not you! Also do you know that since my brother has been gone, more robberys have been done in clayton. This goes to show you that you dont know what you are talking about. He didn't get a fair trial and he is not here to defend himself so we will defend him because to us he was someone that we loved and i'm sure if this happend to one for your close family members you would do the same. So much i want to say to you, but it's not worth it. You dont know what he has done, you dont know anything but what you have read.

i am joeys wife and i will let you that we were in lumpkin county for 2 days 1 of those days joey was dead. we went there with our 3 daughters to have fun on a camping trip. he was never convicted of the charges he was arrested for and while he was in jail and since he has passed there has been other break ins with the same things missing and the same entry. why dont you tell anyone who you really are looter shooter. none of us are ashamed to let anyone know who we are.
sylvia holloway June 19, 2012 at 12:18 am
looter cooter, you may need mental help you can tell all of your info has come from this half bit writer, because guess what from the very first post through to the last one none of the stories have been correct. yes my daughter was in a car seat, something came from behind her and hit her in the head. yes the investigation is over and he was not at fault. pretty soon they will catch the people who have been breaking into the houses and that will be cleared up too. and in bartow county we were arrested because a ring fit the description of one that was stolen, the ring was never identified in person. if anyone gets tired of being wrong let me know and ill give you guys the real story on all of it. as far as lumpkin county goes they are just sad. what do they do when a flood comes check everybodies rap sheet and see who is worth saving
sylvia holloway June 19, 2012 at 12:37 am
the jewelery wasnt fom a bartow county left it was suppose to be from the clayton lefts, how is the weather in left field? what are you talking about shooting a felon? did we miss it, you were the judge and jury in this trial??
sylvia holloway June 19, 2012 at 12:41 am
he doesnt want a well written story he wants a trashy little gossip post, thats why he will never make it any bigger or better than this junk.... never once has he asked for any truth.
Brent Sisson June 19, 2012 at 01:55 am
Looter Who are you? You sound like you are a victum, is that it? You find that this is your only way to feel better. You have to bash a dead man. O.k. you told hijm do you feel better now. It is sad that there are children and innocent family members in this and all you can study is getting even. Well are you even yet. I don't suppose Joey and his family will have peace. My wife is his aunt, and to see her greive and to see a person like yourself spout off with things you know nothing about I find this pitiful. For you that is. You are narrow minded.
kyla June 19, 2012 at 02:46 pm
I will be sure to come knocking on your door for compensation if one of your relatives is charged for a crime(even if they are innocent). Also, if you or one of your loved ones is missing and just so happens to have a record, I'll make sure to tell the police that there is no point in searching because it will waste MY tax dollars. Joey was a human being just like everyone else and deserved to be found like any other person missing in the woods.
You are just being cruel. Who are you to judge someone when you don't know the real truth? Are you in any shape to be able to judge? I'm sure you've got some skeletons in your closet. The person that really did those burglaries is about to get what they deserve. All you would have to do is ask a family member and you could easily get the real story. Joey was full of love and cared deeply for his family. For you to be so cold towards this situation reveals that you are the real sociopath. As for your condolences, you can keep them. Just because you say "Sorry for your loss," does not give you the right to say anything you want and be so disrespectful.

Hi,I just wanted to say that Joey was like my big brother and if we are "measured by what people say when we aren't around" Then you are a ******* *** hole!!We are not judged by any one but god.So take that bs somewere else,u dont even know what the **** your talking about!!
ccmjh May 23, 2013 at 05:08 pm
