News Near Canton: Fire Damages Home in Clayton Community

A 64-year-old woman who was inside the home when the blaze started has been treated for smoke inhalation.

A one-story home in the Clayton community was damaged in a fire that broke out Friday morning.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the call at around 9:30 a.m. and arrived onto the scene at 1939 Hornage Road north of Canton to find smoke billowing from a one-story wooden structure.

The blaze appeared to have been coming from a bedroom located on the front corner of the home, said Cherokee Fire Spokesman Tim Cavender.

A 63-year-old man and a woman, 64, were able to escape the blaze without any serious injuries. However, the woman was transported to Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper to undergo treatment for smoke inhalation.

The majority of the damage was caused by smoke on the front corner of the house, Cavender added.

No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
