Man Severely Burned, Home Destroyed

A woman inside the Yellow Creek Road home said it appeared that the early morning fire started in the garage.

An unidentified man has been transported to Grady Hospital's Burn Center after an early morning fire left him with severe burns to his face, arms, back and feet.

When crews arrived at 3885 Yellow Creek Rd. shortly before 1:15 a.m., they found the ranch-style home "fully involved," spokesman Tim Cavender said.

Ten people—four adults and six children—were inside the home, located in the northeastern part of the county.

The burned man, who Cavender said was 40 years old, was the only one injured.

"A female occupant of the home stated that it appeared that the fire started in the garage," he said. "When the man opened the garage door, a flashover occurred resulting in his injuries."

Due to rainy conditions overnight, emergency crews had to cancel a helicopter that had been called to fly the man to an area hospital. Instead, he was transported by ambulance to Grady.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family. The fire "completely destroyed" the home, Cavender said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
