Historic Ball Ground Home Lost in Blaze

One woman escaped the fire unharmed, but the 1905-era house was lost.

A Monday morning fire destroyed a century-old home in Ball Ground, according to authorities.

A Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services press release said that fire fighters were dispatched to the two story wooden home on Old Dawsonville Highway at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

According to the release, a 74-year-old woman escaped the blaze unharmed, but the house was a complete loss despite the best efforts of the fire crews trying to save it.

Investigators are currently trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

The press release says that the home was originally built in the early part of the last century by Calvin Farmer, a prominent local who was responsible for helping to bring power to Ball Ground. The home on Old Dawsonville Highway actually predated the construction of the road.

The city park next to the home is named in Farmer's honor.

Well, I thank God for helping the elderly woman escape safely and did not let her get hurt
