The Cherokee Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit named its reserved officer of the year during its annual banquet on Wednesday.

Reserve Corporal Matthew Halstead was bestowed the 2013 Reserve Deputy of the Year title during the banquet. Halstead has been employed with the sheriff's office for more than seven years.

The reserve unit in 2013 consisted of 15 deputies, which includes 10 certified and five auxiliary members. The unit, which acts as the service arm for the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, logged 4,548 volunteer hours last year. In 2013, the unit also raised over $9,900 for its Christmas Joy Program, which provided gifts for 153 children.

The reserve unit performs tasks such as civic events, DUI Task Forces, Uniform Patrol and Adult Detention Center shifts.
