A former Creekview High School teacher accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student has pleaded guilty to a lesser offense of the crime.

Adam Blake Bearden, 32, plead guilty to cruelty to children in the first degree and will receive a 10-year sentence.

Bearden will serve the first six months in prison, and will serve the remainder of his sentence on probation "under sex offender conditions," said Shannon Wallace, Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit district attorney.

"It is not uncommon for the charges to be amended pursuant to plea negotiations," Wallace added of the plea deal with Bearden.

Bearden, who resides in Ball Ground, was arrested last November by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and charged with four counts of sexual assault. In June, he was indicted on one count of sexual assault against a person in custody.

Bearden was employed at Creekview High School since 2010 as a special education teacher until his position was terminated by the Cherokee County School District last December.

Before coming to Creekview, he was a biology instructor at Georgia College and State University from 2003-04.
