Fired Elections Supervisor Under Investigation For Fraud

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is investigating whether Janet Munda made improper charges on a county-issued credit card.

The woman who was fired late Wednesday morning from her post as Cherokee County elections supervisor is under investigation for allegedly abusing a government-issued credit card.

That's according to an incident report released by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the allegations against Janet Munda.

Munda, who held the post for 10 years, was terminated from her position unanimously by the Cherokee County Board of Elections and Registration in a called meeting.

According to the report, Cherokee County Manager Jerry Cooper on June 17 met with investigator Nathan Luca with the sheriff's office's Financial Crimes Unit to discuss Munda's alleged "improper use" of county resources with unauthorized purchases made on the county-issued credit card.

Cooper provided the investigator with a packet of information, which included roughly one year's worth of account statements for the card "in the care and control of Janet Munda," the report states.

Cooper also said he'd provided Luca with a copy of the county's purchasing card policies and procedures.

Elections Board Chair Randy Gravley said the board has turned over all files to law enforcement in relation to its investigation.

Kim Stancil has been tapped to serve as interim elections supervisor until a permanent replacement is brought on board, he added.

"This termination has nothing to do with any wrongdoing regarding voting and or the election process," Gravley said in a prepared statement. “We can not make any comment about the personnel matter, but the board will be responsive to any open records act request as required by law.”

Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said the ongoing investigation "will likely take weeks to complete."
