Cherokee Man, 27, Found Dead

Joey Holloway left his campsite Friday to go fishing. His body was found Saturday in a creek near the campsite.

Early Saturday, Natasha Cato started posting pictures of her missing cousin on Facebook and local news sites.

Joey Holloway, 27, of Waleska, had not been seen since Friday, the day he left his campsite near Dahlonega to go fishing.

"Search efforts by police, k9's, helicopters and crews have not been successful," she wrote on her Facebook page at 8:19 a.m. Saturday. "Hopefully, the daylight will help all efforts."

Later that afternoon, she posted another update: "Joey's body was found in the creek near the campsite. Many prayers needed for our family."

An official with the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office referred all questions to the agency's public information officer, who wasn't expected in the office until Monday. And an email to Cato was not returned.

In the months before that now ill-fated fishing excursion at Camp Merrill, Holloway's life took a downward spiral.

On April 20, Holloway was the . He drove off Highway 108 near James White Trail in Waleska and slammed into a tree.

He and his wife, 26-year-old Sylvia Holloway, had just been released from the  after they were arrested and charged with theft by receiving stolen property, Baker said.

The pair allegedly sold stolen jewelry from Cherokee County to a precious metal dealer in Cartersville, he said.

Jewelry was one of the primary targets in the Clayton community burglaries. Electronics and three guns were also taken. Burglars gained access to the homes by kicking in the doors, Baker said.

The nearly two dozen mourners who offered messages of condolence on Cato's Facebook page didn't dwell on Holloway's troubles. Instead, they offered up prayers and remembered a guy with an infectious smile.

"Thanks everyone for all the love, prayers and support for our family," Cato wrote. "It means more to the family than you'll ever know."

Thank you all for your love and support. I am his aunt and I was there searching for my nephew with my family, not the police! We were there with all the harrassment they put our family through. If they would have helped us find him, we could have possibly found him sooner enough to have an open casket for the family and friends and have better closure. I hope that no one has this happen to any loved one especially in Lumpkin County! We begged for help and was told to call back on Monday if we haven't heard from him, well Monday is too late! They insisted that he was in hiding or got in a car and left and NEVER listened to the family as we told that he would not leave his family. PLEASE put yourself in our shoes, if that was your son, daughter, sister, brother, mom, dad, aunt, uncle, cousin or any of your loved one, you would feel very helpless and I hope no one ever has to go through this as myself and family did. Our faith will get us through this and our family is very strong. Please remember all of us in your prayers!

Injustices such as this happen to undocumented people or even those that are perceived to be undocumented people all of the time. Unfortunately, some of the people that are meant to "protect and serve" often have many bias' and stereotypical views of the men and women they deal with. It is very sad that because of this young mans alleged past the police did not act appropriately and made a tragedy even more traumatic by their lack of effort in helping locate the young man. I see there are many readers that have kind hearts and are defending the memory of this young man and that is awesome, I challenge each and every one of us to let the memory of this young man live on in our daily interactions with each other and for all of us to constantly challenge any stereotypes we may have against others based on their ethnicity, age, race, socioeconomic status, legal status, etc. because at the end of the day we are all human and life is a precious gift that should be cherished and respected.

The Patch is consistent with the National Enquirer. They poke fun weekly about the Mug shots of those arrested. Take glee in unfortunate circumstances. Very sad but typical of a portion of our society. This is unprofessional but as long as people read it they really don't seem to care.
My condolence to this family.

I am one of Joey's cousins. He was 4 years younger than me and I spent the majority of my childhood growing up with him and his sisters. I was deeply troubled reading this article and some of the comments. The Bible tells us that we should not judge others. God does that for us and he puts men and woman in position to judge through a court of law and God gave instructions to those appointed judges in 2 Chronicles 19: 4-7- 4 So Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, but he went out among the people, traveling from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, encouraging the people to return to the LORD, the God of their ancestors. 5 He appointed judges throughout the nation in all the fortified cities, 6 and he gave them these instructions: "Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the LORD. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case that comes before you. 7 Fear the LORD and judge with care, for the LORD our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes. Joey may have been charged but did he stand before a judge in a court of law for these charges? I believe he did not. He did stand before God for his sins, which is what EVERYONE will do when they leave this Earth.

What an inappropriate article focusing on the young man's past... when he is already deceased. His family and CHILDREN need compassion and love and lots of prayers NOT this trash article!!
Mandy Roberson June 12, 2012 at 02:44 pm
Cont from above comment: God says in Matthew 7:1&2 "Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. For others will treat you as you treat them. Whatever measure you use in judging others, it will be used to measure how you are judged. God gives the message in a different way in Luke 6:37 "Stop judging others, and you will not be judged. Stop criticizing others, or it will all come back on you. If you forgive others, you will be forgiven. I realize that Joey had a past but everyone does. Who are we to not forgive and condemn him for his sins? To God everyone sins and those sins are all equal to him, which is difficult for us to wrap around our feeble human minds. But that is why God is God and we are merely human. Jesus, who was the only perfect one to walk Earth as a man, died on the cross between two thieves. Jesus did nothing wrong and was condemned just like the thieves. Jesus died for us and forgave everyone, even the two that were crucified beside him. So until you are perfect don't throw the first stone. Pray for this family because regardless of his past (which btw does not matter anymore) they loved him unconditionally. They are hurting and only want to remember the good memories. My only hope is that someone is comforted by the words and verses that God spoke through me on these comments. I encourage everyone to pray for MIchael, Mr. Thrash, and the entire family that is grieving the loss of Joey. His soul is at rest now with Jesus and that is all that matters!

Sorry one more verse.
Romans 2:3 NLT Do you think that God will judge and condemn others for doing them and not judge you when you do them, too? Speaks for itself.

I've known this family my whole life. I pray for peace and understanding for Joey's relatives and friends during this time. Focus on what's important.
lifelong resident June 12, 2012 at 10:21 pm
i realise that its human nature to not want to have to be responsible when things happen to us sometimes, but 99% of the time when we are in the wrong place or with the wrong people its a choice we have made, not usually a mistake. Bad luck doesnt just follow you around,we put ourselves in and around the "badluck".
Sabrina June 12, 2012 at 10:45 pm
I agree that it's a shame that the focus of his untimely death has been overshadowed by his past mistakes. But I also agree with comment above (by lifelong resident). Unfortunetly our bad choices take us down the wrong road. Hopefully his family will find peace soon.
Brittany Chapman June 12, 2012 at 10:47 pm
Melissa - If our efforts in defending the name of a loved one who isn't here to defend himself has impacted your view on Joey as a person.....well, that's just freaking retarded. You didn't know him so go post somewhere else.
Mandy Roberson June 13, 2012 at 11:06 am
Sabrina and lifelong resident- Joey's family is not saying that he did not make bad choices. He did and so has everyone else at some point in his life. What they are upset about is because the writer of the article and some others that were making rude comments did not really know Joey. He made some mistakes but he was also making some recent good choices that if Mr. Thrash would have known if he interviewed some of his family members. Joey was being harshly judged without people knowing his whole story. That is why his family is upset.
Michael Evans June 13, 2012 at 02:00 pm
Let him rest in peace, and know one here one earth has the right to judge him,we all do bad things in r life but know one has any rights to judge him ,but god and he is a forgiven god,so keep all off your opinions to yourself ,let his family heal there hurt and loss.

Has the autopsy report came back yet ?
Rodney Thrash (Editor) June 15, 2012 at 06:48 pm
Lt. Wesley Burnett of the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office had this to say: "No new info as of yet. It sometimes takes several weeks for official results to be returned."
Jerrica June 16, 2012 at 01:16 am
It can take up to 6 months. And it's none your business!!!!! And when we find out we ain't letting you know!!!

Jerrica June 16, 2012 at 10:08 pm

I was reading some of the comments and Joey at least gave people something to talk about.Joey done this a lot in his life wether it was home, out with friends, baseball fields, and football fields. Of course it was all good! Joey took the proper steps to prove his innocence, but as you all know his life was cut short. My son is not here to defend himself so all the people judging him should stop. Until you have walked in someone else's shoes you don't know there story as we don't know yours. My guess would be if you did know him you would be sorry for what you said! Joey has been places all over the country and done more fun things that a lot of people will ever get to do in there life's. Joey also had more Heart and Talent than most will ever have! Yes and as Joeys mom I know this as a fact! Joeys judge is God,Joey left here that Friday morning he's at peace now. Enough said now for this little online Newspaper called Sixes Patch Canton!!!

Were you with Joey when he was stealing? Is that why you can be so certain he was a thieft? A very loved young man has lost his life and a family grieves.Prayers and love should be sent.Michael we are dailey losing our rights, but we all should hope to be innocent till proven guilty, life has many twists and turns who knows you might find yourself in need of innocent till proven guilty before you die.I did not know Joey, and I do not know his family but sounds like I would have liked to have met him and his family, but you Michael I hope I never have the pleasure for you see there is a time and place for everything under heaven. The mean remarks and awful articles I have read were not the time or place. To his sister and mom stay strong he was so lucky to have you for his family. sincerely with love and prayers

These are all things that you http://www.coachoutletonlinegg.com/ should know about America. http://www.coachoutletonlineaol.net/ I also know that we have much to http://www.coachfactoryoutletwy.com/ learn about China. Looking http://www.coachoutletstorefc.com/ around at this magnificent http://www.coachoutletaol.org/ city -- and looking around http://www.coachfactoryonlineest.net/ this room -- I do believe http://www.coachfactoryoutletpst.com/ that our nations hold something http://www.coachfactoryoutlettx.com/ important in common, and that is http://www.coachfactoryonlinefc.org/ a belief in the future. http://www.coachoutletwy.com/ Neither the United States nor China http://www.coachoutletonlineybw.com/ is content to rest on our achievements.
