What's the Best Mosquito Repellent?

Sprays, fogging and misting can keep them away.

It has been a couple of weeks since my last post. Pest control, in general, has been extremely busy.

We left off with . So how do we stop them from biting? There are a few methods.

Of course, what we all know to do is use a spray-on product that will repel mosquitoes. However, do we really want to spray every part of our body? Sprays are icky. I know when I spray myself with a mosquito repellent, I feel dirty. What can we do instead of using a spray?

There are two methods used to deter mosquitoes from your yard: fogging or misting. To fog your yard, you can buy a handheld machine from your home improvement store and fog the area that you want to keep mosquitoes away. I have heard that the fog lasts anywhere from six to eight hours. A professional will use a gas-powered backpack blower that has a liquid tank to spray the material on trees, shrubs, bushes and other places where mosquitoes lie at rest during the day. This method tends to last a solid three weeks, sometimes four.

The other way is to purchase a misting machine (thousands of dollars plus maintenance) that is set up with nozzles to spray as needed. The nozzles are positioned at "people" level. Therefore, the misting machine is limited to the space is can spray.

Which methods is best? It is up to you. I personally think you get the biggest bang for your buck by hiring a professional. Monthly treatments are reasonably priced and call backs are usually free. The material works for nearly a month.  Your yearly investment compared to the machine and its maintenance is minimal.
