Living With Unfulfilled Dreams

Do you ever dream of being the next Michael Jordan? Then realize that it is impossible for you to run and bounce a ball at the same time. Do you daydream of opening a five-star restaurant and becoming a world-renowned chef? But cannot rise above burned toast. Is your fantasy to live in an exotic place where in the evening you are serenaded by steel drums? Instead the market crashes and it is going to take you until you turn eighty to retire.

One of the most difficult things to deal with in life is unfulfilled dreams. How do we live beyond dreams that never become reality? At an early age we are told we can become anything we dream. Then when life becomes less than the dream realized, we are set up for disappointment. For many the release of a dream translates into failure.

Letting go of a dream doesn’t have to be about losing. It depends on our perspective in life. Disappointment is a part of life. If we spend our days refusing to acknowledge the disappointment or fighting against it, we miss out on life. We need to approach life as a learner and see unfilled dreams as teachers, not undertakers. We must honor the experience, glean from it the lessons it taught us, and discover the person we have become in the process. For everything there is a season, we can’t keep looking back and trying to cultivate something that is already dead. Approach every day as a learner and let the story of your life surprise you instead of defeat you.
