Refuge for the Hungry

This past week Liberty Hill Church prepared meals on Tuesday and Thursday to serve the community. Two hundred meals were given out at the church located on Railroad Street in downtown Canton.

Meatloaf, carrots and a cup of fruit may not sound like an ideal meal for a 9-year-old, but for some children in Cherokee County, it is the only nutritious meal they will get for the day.

According to the 2012 numbers, 31 percent of students in Cherokee County are eligible for free or reduced lunch. It is a relative low percentage when compared to some counties in the surrounding area. Regardless, one out of three students is in need of financial assistance. It also means that during school breaks, some of these children may go without a nutritious meal. Liberty Hill Church has chosen not to let that happen for some children in the community.Β

This past week the church prepared meals on Tuesday and Thursday to serve the community. Two hundred meals were given out at the church located on Railroad Street in downtown Canton. It was an outreach started back in the summer under the direction of Susan Kyle. As a staff member responsible for overseeing the benevolence fund, Mrs. Kyle felt burdened to provide for the children in the community surrounding the church. Building on the momentum of the summer lunch program and the generosity of some members, the church was able to continue providing lunches during the Fall Break.

Volunteers gathered at the church at 10 a.m. to make sandwiches and pack lunch bags. The serving begin at 11:30 a.m. The church had some volunteer support by students and faculty from Legacy Home School Academy. On Tuesday, the students stood in the rain and held up signs. They returned on Thursday to give out sandwiches. Families from the church shared a meal with their neighbors and focused on building relationships.

The Bible speaks of God as a refuge for the poor (Isaiah 25:4; Psalm 14:6). It is the Church, as the body of Christ, who has to stand with the poor. Providing a meal is one way Liberty Hill Church has chosen to care for the poor and hungry in the community.
