In the Depths in an Aurora Theater

A dark chaos broke out in the early hours of Friday morning in Aurora, Colorado. The death toll has been listed at 12 with scores more injured and a community left paralyzed in shock.

“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord,” begins Psalm 130. The writer has found himself in a deep place. A place that is fearful, dark, and echoes with every scream. A place he didn’t expect. When tragedy strikes, we all find ourselves in dark places.

A dark chaos broke out in the early hours of Friday morning in Aurora, Colorado. A gunman dressed in black stood at the front of a theatre, threw a smoke bomb, and unleashed gunfire into the audience. The moviegoers were there for the screening of the new Batman movie. The death toll has been listed at 12 with scores more injured and a community left paralyzed in shock. A community left in darkness.

“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.” A place we did not choose but a place we were thrown into nonetheless. It is in this dark place we join the cries of the Psalmist, “Lord, hear my voice.” I am not sure what would possess a young man to open fire on a group of people. I do not understand the madness surrounding the events in Aurora, Colorado. I know we live in a wounded world among broken people. Today, the action of one of the broken among us has left a community screaming out for comfort.

A community that has found itself in the dark abyss of pain and confusion can become hostile. In darkness, you can reach out for a hand of anger, frustration, and hate. But there is another hand in the darkness ready to be grasped. It is the hand of peace, comfort and forgiveness. It is the hand of God. God hears our voice in the depths because God is with us in the depths. My prayers go out to the people of Aurora, Colorado.
