Canton Resident Wins Art, Poetry Contest

Lane Cannon of Canton was named a national finalist in art for the River of Words Environmental Poetry and Art Project.

A Springmont School student from Canton was among six from the school who won state and national awards in the River of Words Environmental Poetry and Art Project.

Lane Cannon, the daughter of David and Jory Cannon of Canton, was named a national finalist in the art category in the contest.

Along with the Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words sponsors the contest, which is centered around the theme of watersheds.

"This project works directly in conjunction with our core value of being good stewards of the environment," said Head of School Jerri King." At Springmont, students are guided to develop an awareness of the natural world and each person’s responsibility for it. The River of Words project allows our students to learn about the watershed while expressing their creativity. I couldn’t be more proud of our students."

The Georgia Award Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4 at the DeKalb County Library.
