Cherokee High School presents "Noises Off"

The Cherokee High School "Cherokee Players" perform "Noises Off," a hilarious behind the scene view of the cast and crew of play.

Director, Miss Leia Taylor, and the Cherokee Players will be presenting "Noises Off," by Michael Fryan.  Miss Taylor describes it as "A play about a group of actors and all the problems their personal and social lives cause during the run of their show.  It's about everything that can and does go wrong during a performance, and the results are hilarious."  While watching the rehearsal, the complexity of the second act is handled well by the cast and has proven to be the most challenging part of rehearsals.  While the cast is made up of "several veteran female actors, and three male actors who are taking to the stage for the first time at Cherokee High School," the movements are quick, and timing is impressive to watch how the actors make the play flow so smoothly.

Ms. Sydney "Syd" Harrison, an eighteen year old senior, tells me a little more about working on "Noises Off," the hardest play, to date, that she has been involved in. Syd says the three acts are full of "fast entrances and exits, along with all sorts of crazy turns and lots of movements to remember." This is Syd's twelfth play to be involved in over the past five years.  Syd shares how being in theatre at Cherokee High School means "you get to be involved in all aspects: crew, design, costume, make up, and set construction."  From playing the lead in "Noises Off," to supporting roles in two other plays, as well as part of the ensemble cast in "Annie," to her various crew positions, Miss Harrison's long term goals see her attending college at Oakland University in Troy, Michigan, to pursuing an acting career on stage, movie and television.  Syd says that she helped out with plays her mother was in, and one day, she filled in for an actress that wasn't there.  The director asked her mother why she was so good at it.  Miss Harrison says, "That lit the flame."

If you have ever wondered what it looks like behind the scenes of a play, this is humorously true to life.  If you want a good laugh, come see Syd and the rest of the cast as they perform three showings on May 2-4, at 7:00 p.m.  Advance ticket sales are online at http://www.cherokeeplayers.com for $5 a ticket, or $7 at the door.

*When I went to photograph the rehearsal, my six and seven year old were also with me.  Both children put down their iPods and were laughing within minutes. The humor transcends the ages.  We look forward to seeing this play, and hope to see you there!
