Farris Yawn To Run For Canton City Council

The Canton businessman will run for the seat vacated by Glen Cummins, who on Thursday was chosen as the Canton city manager.

Even though the city of Canton has not formally called a special election to fill its vacant Ward III council seat, one resident is already declaring his intentions to run in the election.

Farris Yawn announced on Friday that he will be a candidate for the Canton City Council seat vacated by Glen Cummins, who on Thursday was tapped to serve as Canton's city manager.

Yawn made the announcement on Friday on his Facebook profile. Yawn said he's been approached in the past few weeks by "many, many citizens" who asked him to consider running for the seat.

The Canton City Council will consider calling for a special election to fill the seat during its July 17 meeting.

Once approved, qualifying will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25 to Wednesday, Aug. 27 at Canton City Hall. The qualifying fee is $63.

The candidate chosen in the special election will serve out Cummins' term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2016.

Yawn, owner of Yawn's Books & More, ran for the other Ward III seat in 2013 in a three-way race along with residents John Rust and Molly Lewis.

While Yawn and Rust garnered enough votes in the November general election to advanced to the December run-off, Rust was eventually elected to the council seat.
