Canton Resident Qualifies for School Board

Susie Tlacil and former Cherokee School Board member Mike Chapman will duke it out for the District 6 seat.

Another Canton resident has officially entered the District 6 race for the Cherokee County School Board.

Susie Tlacil qualified as a Republican candidate for the post, which covers parts of Canton and northwest Cherokee County. She will face off with fellow Republican candidate and Canton resident Mike Chapman, a former member of the school board who retired in December 2012.

The seat is currently represented by incumbent Robert Wofford, who decided not to seek re-election to a second term.

Tlacil, a small business owner, said she was "grateful we live in a country where citizens take ownership of their government and I am humbled to participate in the process."

If elected, Tlacil said she plans to advocate for expanding technical education opportunities for students.

"Public education should not force a student into a common path, but provide
opportunity for a student to choose their own path," she said.

Tlacil is a volunteer sports coach, band booster, a substitute teacher and Brownie leader. She currently sits on the Great Sky neighborhood community association's board.

Tlacil and husband Mike have three children, Amanda, Allie and Aaron, a Cherokee High School graduate.
