Northside Hospital-Cherokee Adds Cardiac Cath Suite

The newest addition to the hospital's cardiac catheterization lab expands the amount of heart patients that can receive minimally-invasive diagnostic procedures.

Northside Hospital-Cherokee's second suite for its state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology lab was opened on May 15.

Since the first suite opened in 2007, the Canton hospital has seen roughly 1,000 cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology procedures performed a year. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is the only provider of these services in Cherokee County.

"With the additional room, not only will we be able to accommodate a higher volume of patients, but we also can offer more scheduling flexibility for both patients and physicians, which will better serve our community," said Angela Edgar, RN, MS, CCRN-CMC, RCIS, manager of cardiology services, Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

The cath lab, as it is called, allows doctors to use catheters to perform a minimally-invasive procedure to determine the presence of blockages in the heart and coronary arteries.

Interventional radiology is used by specialist radiologists to look inside patients' bodies while guiding a catheter through blood vessels and other body passageways.
