Morning Briefing: More Candidates For Special Election

1. Weather: Partly sunny skies await Canton today, with a high around 54 degrees according to the National Weather Service. Tonight's low is expected to dip to 31 degrees, so you'll want to bring in your outdoor plants.

2. In Case You Missed It: The Canton Police Department has released photographs of some of the clothes worn by the man who was found behind the Canton Marketplace Sunday morning. An autopsy has been performed on the man, but the police are still trying to identify him.

The 16-year old boy who was feared to have fled the state for California by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office returned to his home yesterday, authorities said. It is not believed the teenager ever left the state.

3. Happening Now: Another Cherokee County resident has entered the race to succeed Sean Jerguson as the Representative for Georgia House District 21. Eduardo Correia of Holly Springs, an international account director, is running as an independent. Jerguson, for his part, has qualified to run for the Senate seat vacated by Chip Rogers earlier this month.

5. On This Date in History: On Dec. 12, 1942, forces of the German Wehrmacht under the command of Field Marshall Erich von Manstein began Unternehmen Wintergewitter (Operation Winter Storm), the attempt to relieve the encircled Sixth Army in the "kessel" (cauldron) of Stalingrad.

Despite taking Soviet forces by surprise on the first day of the offensive, the refusal of Hitler and Sixth Army commander Friedrich Paulus to order the encircled German troops to try to break out of the kessel, combined with a massive Soviet counterattack on Dec. 16, caused von Manstein to call off the attack on Dec. 23. The encircled Sixth Army surrendered on Feb 3. 1943.
