Morning Briefing: Light for Jorelys

Here's what's going on in Canton this Monday.

1. Weather: Sometimes you have to love the South. According to the National Weather Service, after the fog burns off around 9 a.m. we are going to see a high temperature today of 71 degrees. Folks, it's December. Tonight's low should be around 48 degrees.

2. In Case You Missed It: Last night people from all walks of life came to the Pruett YMCA to remember the life of Jorelys Rivera, who was murdered on Dec. 2, 2011. If you were unable to make it to the service, check out Patch's photo gallery and leave a message for Jorelys.

This weekend, Santa took some time off from his busy schedule to drop by Cannon Park to be a part of the Annual Christmas Parade! Browse Patch's photos of the fun and add your own if you're so inclined!

3. Happening Now: Although Canton resident and Milton High School coach Michael Scott passed away on Friday, the family is still in need of financial support to pay Michael's medical bills. Find out at 10 a.m. how you can help get the grieving family back on its feet again.

4. Looking Ahead: Rebecca Johnston of the Cherokee Tribune wrote an op-ed Sunday criticising the City of Canton's poor financial management with the purchase of the new Christmas lights. Read Councilman Bill Bryan's rebuttal to Johnston's critiques at noon, and let us know who's right!

5. On This Date in History: On Dec. 3, 1967, Cape Town, South Africa is the site of the world's first heart transplant. The team of doctors, led by Christiaan Barnard, replaced the heart of 53-year-old Louis Washkansky with that of 24-year-old Denise Darvall. Although Washkansky died 18 days later of pneumonia, the operation is considered a success because there was no outside force operating the transplanted heart.
