5. On This Date in History: On Nov. 8, 1942, American and British forces invaded Vichy French-occupied North Africa in the opening stages of Operation Torch. The weak French resistance to the Allied invasion convinced Nazi Germany to invade unoccupied parts of France, which they had conquered in 1940.
