Cobb EMC now purchasing solar power

Expanded renewable energy portfolio benefits co-op members, environment 

Cobb EMC has expanded the cooperative’s energy portfolio to include solar power from Azalea Solar, one of the largest solar power plants in Georgia. Friday’s ribbon cutting ceremony marked the launch of production for the 7.7-megawatt photovoltaic ground-mounted project in Washington County, Georgia.

In March 2013, Dominion (NYSE:D) acquired the Azalea Solar project from CBRE Solar and Jacoby Development, Inc. and construction was completed at the end of 2013. Azalea Solar, a 100-acre farm, is now one of the largest solar power plants in the southeast.

“We’re always looking for practical ways to diversify our energy mix and expand our renewable energy portfolio while still keeping costs as low as possible for our members,” said Chip Nelson, President and CEO of Cobb EMC. 

Cobb EMC’s power purchase agreement, signed in late 2010, will provide solar power generation over the next 25 years.

Affordable, renewable energy has long been a focus for Cobb EMC. The Georgia Conservation Voters honored the cooperative in 2013 for efforts to diversify power through renewable resources. Additionally, Cobb EMC offers members environmentally friendly green power through Green Power EMC, including hydro, biomass and reclaimed methane gas from landfills.
