Yawn's Books Leaving Main Street

Although the bookstore will close up shop, the Canton business hopes to expand its other enterprises.

After an eight year run as one of the most prominent businesses along Main Street in Canton, Yawn's Books & More will be closing in December.

The closure does not mean the end of Yawn's, however; the bookkeeping, publishing and book club aspects of the old bookstore will be transferred to a new location once a suitable property is found.

“The only thing we’re doing is closing the physical bookstore,” owner Farris Yawn told the Cherokee Tribune.

With the store's closure penciled in for Christmas Eve, 2013 will be a time for Yawn to expand his publishing business, which has already published books from authors in several states.

From now until the store's closure, most merchandise is being sold at discounted prices.

This is heartbreaking news.

Another loss to downtown Canton, and still, our City Council does nothing to assist. Oh wait, they are trying to destroy the Main Street program - the one thing that was generating some results despite of any support from them! Who's next?

If a potential business owner came to one of our "circus show" council meetings I am sure at this point they would run away screaming. We can't even hold one council meeting with a sense of decorum. Canton City Council is "bad for business" in regard to the City of Canton. Time to make some changes! I am sad to see another downtown business close.

Actually John some of us on the council, including myself, are advocating that all or at least some of the $64,000 cost savings realized from the proposed Charter change will be used for additional economic development including the Main St. program. Under Ginger's leadership the MSP has done pretty well and I personally hope that she decides to stay with it. It's time to take it up a few notches and do even better!

"Run away screaming" seems a bit of an exageration Sandy. However, it would be nice if the audience would refrain from screaming (not an exageration) and start showing our Mayor more respect during the meetings - he runs the meetings and is in control of the decorum - you guys yelling out, claping, whispering, and talking over the speakers really makes Gene look bad. He is a good man and is doing the best he can.

Hmm...watch the video Mr. Bryan. I am not sure what personality you are wearing today but, you were the one out of control and disrespecting the mayor...as usual. You are the main issue!

Your reverse psychology is not doing any good here. What was the offer to Gene again? Drop the fire district and you would drop the employee issue? Why did you want the fire district dropped so badly? Seems yet again...shady at best.
Bill Bryan November 27, 2012 at 10:07 PM
The deal Sandy, that Gene and I made was that I would drop the employee issue from the agenda for that meeting and he would drop the fire issue from the agenda for that meeting. I did, he did and that was that.

Sandy can you be more specific? I tried watching and honestly it is pretty tedious. At what point on the minute counter was I misbehaving?

First of all, again, I am not "Sandy"...secondly, why should any "deals" about the agenda be made? That sounds suspect and shady to me. If an issue needs to be discussed for the betterment of the City, then it should be discussed.

How about your little inappropriate poem for starters....
