Small Business Spotlight: Downtown Deli Dogs

Canton-Sixes Patch talked with Manager Jessica Rodriguez at the new sandwich shop in downtown Canton to talk about the restaurant's recent opening.

Downtown Deli Dogs is one of several restaurants that opened this year in downtown Canton. While its name suggests its specialty is hot dogs, manager Jessica Rodriguez told Canton-Sixes Patch that the shop sells many other varities of sandwiches.

Patch: Why did you choose to open during the downturn in the economy? What are the advantages and disadvantages to that?

Rodriguez: Some of the advantages are it gives you a chance to get your name out there a bit, to show that small businesses are hanging in there and doing all that we can. The disadvantages would be that it’s hard for people to go out and have a nice dinner and go out all the time. Pockets are kind of tight, especially around the holidays.

Patch: How are you integrating into the community?

Rodriguez: We’re still working on getting more exposure to our name. Advertising is the hardest part, but it’s going well. Canton is welcoming.

Patch: Why did you pick downtown Canton?

Rodriguez: (The owner) chose downtown because he thought it was a nice area and he wanted to revitalize it a bit. He sees the potential in downtown, and he really likes the area. He opened this business for a place where families (can come) and businesses can (hold) meetings. He wanted it to have a friendly environment. We’ve been working with the city a little bit to help with the local festivals to try to get more people to downtown Canton.

Patch: What sets you apart from other restaurants?

Rodriguez: We have friendly service. We have 100 percent beef hot dogs. We take very good care of the food we hand out. Quality is very important. We try to get things out as fast as possible. Also, friendly conversation.

Patch: What is something that would surprise people to know about your shop?

Rodriguez: A lot of people think (we) just (sell) hot dogs. We have sandwiches. We have vegetarian items. We have Italian ice for dessert. For our December special, we’re working in soups and wraps. We have a killer Reuben sandwich. A lot of people love it. We have chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and things like that.

Downtown Deli Dogs opened in June. Its hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
