Riverstone Blockbuster Closing

The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September, is up for sale.

, once the movie rental giant, is closing its Riverstone Parkway location.

Yellow and black signs announcing the store's demise are posted on the entrance.

One reads: "THIS LOCATION ONLY."

It isn't clear when the store will officially close. This afternoon, as curious customers picked through deeply discounted inventory, an employee told a woman that April 10 would be the Riverstone location's last day.

Store associates declined to say anything to a Canton-Sixes Patch reporter. Instead, they referred questions to Blockbuster's Dallas headquarters. Calls to company spokesman Jason Treu were not returned today.

Blockbuster burst onto the scene when VCRs and VHS tapes became fixtures in living rooms across America. It created catch phrases such as "Be kind, rewind," which reminded customers of their responsibility before they returned a movie.

But with the introduction of Netflix and Redbox, Blockbuster lost its grip as the king of movie rentals. Consumers could rent online, through the mail and at in-store kiosks at more affordable rates and without the hassle of late fees.

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy protection in September to reduce $1 billion worth of debt. Then last month, the company was put up for sale.

In an interview with the Associated Press in September 2009, a Blockbuster executive said the company was thinking about closing as many as 960 stores by the end of 2010.

Canton has another Blockbuster on .

At the Riverstone store, a steady stream of customers passed through the store on Wednesday for some of their favorite titles.

DVDs were going for as low as $2.99.
