Retailers See Mixed Sunday Sales

One retailer said his store's business has increased on Sundays while another said sales are more spread out now that Sunday package sales are allowed.

An employee at one Canton business said the ability to sell packaged alcohol on Sundays has improved his business.

Zahid Riqbal said on Waleska Street had very few customers on Sundays before the sale of packaged alcohol was allowed. Now, the business has 30-50 customers on Sundays, which he said is very good.

“Before, my store was dead,” Riqbal said. “Now, it’s much, much better than before.”

Officials with , though, said they aren’t seeing an increase in business now that Sunday sales are allowed. Brenda Reid -- media and community relations manager for Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee -- said that although more and more people are buying packaged alcohol at the on Sundays now that they know they can do so, the supermarket hasn’t seen an extreme increase in sales on Sundays in Canton. However, that was expected, Reid said.

“We expected it to be more spread out over seven days rather than six,” she said.

Ingles Markets cannot disclose sales information for individual stores because the grocery store chain is a public company, spokesman Ron Freeman said.

"We can’t report any detailed store information," Freeman said.

Officials at other convenience and grocery stores were not able to be reached for comment.

Last November,  in support of packaged alcohol sales in liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores on Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. In December, the  approved an , and Sunday sales of packaged alcohol began on Dec. 18.

Sunday package sales have had mixed success throughout Cherokee County. In Holly Springs, the co-owner of Uncle Jack’s spirits, the city’s only package store, said that sales have been slow, which is . Sales there are spread out over seven days rather than six. Woodstock has seen mixed results as well with one retailer saying business has increased and another saying sales have been spread out among the weekend.
