Cherokee's Unemployment Rate Rises to 7.3

The Georgia Department of Labor attributed increases across metro Atlanta to two seasonal factors.

Cherokee County's unemployment rate jumped to 7.3 percent in June from 6.9 percent in May, according to numbers the Georgia Department of Labor released today.

This increase mirrored an uptick across metro Atlanta, where the unemployment rate jumped from 8.2 percent in May to 8.9 percent in June.

But at 7.3 percent, Cherokee has one of the lowest unemployment rates when compared to its neighboring counties tracked by the Georgia Department of Labor. Only Forsyth was lower at 6.9:

  • Bartow - 9.2
  • Cobb - 8.0
  • Fulton - 9.8
  • Forsyth - 6.9
  • Dawson - 7.8
  • Pickens - 7.9
  • Gordon - 10.2
In a statement, the Department of Labor attributed the increases to the large numbers of education workers who are unemployed during the summer and new graduates who are considered unemployed until they find a job.
