Budget Adopted Without Millage Rate Increaes

Some cost-cutting measures were employed to maintain the current millage rate in the City of Canton.

The City of Canton's fiscal year 2014 budget was amended to remove the need for a 17 percent millage rate increase before it was adopted Thursday evening.

Mayor Gene Hobgood told Patch that the budget was balanced by the abandonment of plans to hire new fire fighters for the Canton Police Department and by transferring some fund balance money to the budget.

These moves allowed the city to adopt a budget for the next fiscal year without raising the millage rate from its current rate of 6.8 mills. Previous plans from the city had included a millage rate increase of 1.187 mills, a property tax increase of some 17.87 percent.

Three public hearings were held on the proposed budget between Aug. 1 and the final hearing on Aug. 22.

Canton-Sixes Patch has asked the City of Canton for a copy of the fiscal year budget, and will attach it to this article when it is received.
