Building Canton's New Park.

Construction is well underway on the Etowah River Park

Yesterday I visited the site of our new Etowah River Park. Construction is well underway on what promises to be a beautiful passive park in Canton. The best feature of this City of Canton facility will be the access to the river. Even though the Etowah cuts right through the heart of the city, it’s natural beauty remains almost invisible to most of us.

The photo shown is the new boat launch which will be a prominent feature of the park. The launch was completed late last year. It was a joint project built by the Georgia Mountain Stewards and the Coosa River Basin Initiative with the cooperation and assistance of the City of Canton. Funding was provided by these two volunteer organizations using ZERO tax dollars.

The Etowah River Park will be connected to Heritage Park with a pedestrian bridge. The bridge will be an integral part of a network of trails along the Etowah. The new park will also include a state of the art playground, walking paths, restrooms, and several large open fields for free play. A significant portion of the park consists of protected wetlands. There will be plenty of parking as well as an amphitheater to be built later as funds become available.

We hope to complete construction of the park before the end of the year but the much needed rains we are experiencing will be a significant factor in the timetable. For any questions or additional information, please feel free to contact any member of the Canton City Council.
