Cherokee High Will Get New Girls' Softball Complex

The Cherokee County School Board on Thursday approved a contract to build a new complex and improve existing athletic facilities at Cherokee High School.

Cherokee County's oldest high school will soon see improvements to its athletic facilities.

The Cherokee County School Board on Thursday unanimously voted to approve a contract with Womack, Lewis & Smith, Inc. to make improvements on Cherokee High School's physical education and athletic facilities.

The contract amount is $5.83 million. Womack was the lowest of three companies who submitted requests for proposals on the project.

The improvements will include a new girls' softball field complex, press box with public restrooms for both softball and baseball use, new field houses with public restrooms at the school's football stadium and renovations of the current football field to allow for all physical education and athletic uses and events.

The work is expected to wrap up by August 2014.

The new girls' softball field for the school was made possible by the school district in May approving the use of Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars to relocate sewer lines, which allowed the district to use the property for the new complex.
