The 1905 Salad

It's been a family staple.

For as long as I can remember, my family has been making the 1905 salad. Coming from Tampa, FL, I have grown up eating Spanish food. There's a landmark in Tampa called the Columbia Restaurant. It serves some of the best Spanish/Cuban food in Florida. One particular item on the menu is the 1905 salad. It's name originates from the ancestors of the original owners of the famous restaurant. They immigrated from Cuba to Tampa and started a small coffee/sandwich shop in 1905 that is now known as the Columbia Restaurant.

This salad is one of my favorites. It's always served at our family gatherings. When I returned home to Tampa recently for my mom's 79th birthday, this salad was definitely on the table. The recipe is adapted from the Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook. I usually leave out the olives because I'm not a big olive fan.

1 head of iceberg lettuce

2 tomatoes, diced

½ cup of ham, cut into 1-in. strips

½ cup of swiss, cut into 1-in. strips

¼ cup of green olive, pitted

2 tsps. of grated Parmesan cheese

¼ cup of white wine vinegar

¾ cup olive oil

4 garlic cloves, minced

2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tsps. dried oregano

4 tsps. fresh lemon juice

1. Toss together all of the salad ingredients.

2. Whisk together the garlic, Worcestershire sauce and oregano.

3. Gradually add the olive oil.

4. Stir in the vinegar and lemon juice.

5. Season with salt and pepper.

6. Add to salad and mix well.

Make this salad for your next gathering. It will become a staple in your house.

Stay safe and eat great, Canton.

The Columbian Restaurant has two locations one in Tampa and the other at The Pier in St Pete, Fl. Across the Howard Franklin Bridge. That is where I fell in love with the 1905 salad and now that I have the recipe, I can enjoy it here without having to drive 10 hours to get it. Thanks so much. :-)

Your welcome June . If you ever get back to Tampa , they have a new location at channelside in the back of the new Tampa museum. It's so nice right on the water.
