Get Out: The Great Scarecrow Contest

Scarecrows in the park and football on the field can only mean one thing: it's autumn in Canton. Get out and enjoy the new season.


Where/When: Cannon Park, downtown Canton; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why Go: Get your creativity going and take your fully assembled scarecrow to Cannon Park. It will remain on display through Oct. 31. Awards, based on votes from the public, will be announced Oct. 29 at the Great Pumpkin Festival. Check out all the rules and regulations on the . This event is sponsored by Canton Main Street Program.

Where/When: Falany Performing Arts Center, Waleska; 3 p.m. Sunday

Why Go: Spend an afternoon enjoying the sounds of this wind quintet with Alison Blackburn, Reinhardt faculty member, on clarinet. The group will perform a two-hour concert of standard quintet literature. Get out and put some music in your weekend.

Where/When: , Canton; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: Volunteers are needed to help keep the Etowah clean. Get out in the great outdoors and help Rivers Alive, Upper Etowah River Alliance and Cherokee County Stormwater with the waterway cleanup. Bring or wear your old shoes and clothes. Gloves will be provided, but organizers encourage volunteers to bring heavy work gloves of their own. Breakfast, snacks and water will be provided. After the cleanup, volunteers will be served a lunch of hot dogs, chips and drinks. Other sponsors are Cherokee County Water & Sewerage Authority and the  and Waste Management.

Why Go: It's Friday and it's homecoming. The Warriors will take on the for a great Friday Night Lights matchup. Gates open at 6.

Why Go: You can learn all you ever wanted to know about building a pond or other water features for your own backyard. The seminar, sponsored by the Cherokee County Master Gardeners and the , is free, but seating is limited. Call and reserve a seat.
