Patch Picks: Five Great Nonprofits Making a Difference

1. offers a food pantry, clothing, financial assistance, housing assistance, employment assistance and help with language translation to needy families.

2. For more than two years, the of Cherokee County has seen the number of requests for financial assistance increase. Its annual "Partner With Youth" campaign ensures that struggling members can attend summer day camps, sports programs, aquatics programs and exercise facilities. Read Heather Harter's story .

3. Through various offerings, the Malon D. Mimms Boys & Girls Club tries to enhance the lives of children in Cherokee County who come from economically disadvantaged homes. The club, which is on Univeter Road, provides homework assistance, life skills, sports and more.

4. Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA for Children) trains community volunteers to speak on behalf of children involved in juvenile court child protection proceedings. Executive director Deidre Hollands recently announced that CASA will join in a national effort to end child abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month.
