Remembering a King

Schools, government offices closed in observance of civil rights icon and Atlanta's native son.

1. Schools and government offices will be closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Saturday would have been King's 82nd birthday, but the federal holiday falls on the third Monday in January. This is the 25th anniversary of the first national observance of the slain civil rights leader. A King memorial on Washington's National Mall will be dedicated in August.

2. While there are no city-sponsored Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities, The Bounce House Amusement Center, 765 Ash St., will host half- and full-day camps that teach area children how to make changes in their own world. The full-day camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is $40 for the first child and $35 for each additional child. The half-day camp, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is $25 for the first child and $20 for each additional child. Lunch is provided. Call 770-345-JUMP to register.
