National Crime Victims Rights Week Kicks off in Cherokee

The Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force will hold a victim impact panel later this week to commemorate the week.

Thousands of crime victims and victim advocates in Cherokee County and across the country will commemorate National Crime Victims’ Rights Week with rallies, candlelight vigils, forums and other public awareness activities that highlight this year’s theme, New Challenges, New Solutions.

The Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force, along with co-sponsors Anna Crawford Children’s Center and the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, has received $4,980 from the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators (NAVAA) through a grant from the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) within the Office of Justice Programs of the U.S. Department of Justice.

The money was used to create printed promotional materials, including posters, postcards, and resource information for victims of crime. 

To kick off this special week, the Task Force had an awareness table at the Williamsons Bros BBQ Benefiting the Anna Crawford Children's Center at the Gazebo in Cannon Park in downtown Canton.

Proceeds from the lunch benefited the Center, which is based in Canton.

Later this week, the Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force will host its 4th annual Victim Impact Panel from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday April 25 in the second floor courtroom of the Cherokee County Historic Courthouse in Canton.

Lunch will be provided to the first 75 people. Victims of crime will share their stories for others to learn from their experiences.

The Cherokee County Domestic Violence Task Force, which seeks to strengthen the community’s response to family violence by increasing perpetrator accountability, enhancing victim safety, and providing education and awareness to the community, meets the second Friday of each month at the historic courthouse.

The meetings are from noon to 1:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
