5. On This Date in History: On April 9, 1917, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps launch their offensive against German positions at Vimy Ridge in France. Due to extensive planning, innovative training techniques and dominating artillery fire, the Canadians drove the Germans from the ridge in three days. The battle marked the first time Canadian forces fought together, and was a nationalistic milestone for the country.
