5. On This Date in History: On April 19, 1775, colonial militiamen in Lexington, Massachusetts who were making a show of force against a British incursion into Concord, were surrounded by the British column and asked to disperse. When the militiamen refused to go home despite the orders of their commanding officer Capt. John Parker, a shot was fired. The "shot heard 'round the world," whether it came from a British or American musket, was the spark that set off the American Revolution.
