5. On This Date in History: On May 23, 1618, sectarian tensions between Protestants and Catholics in Bohemia came to a head when Protestant officials afraid of a Catholic government in their country threw their suppossed oppressors out of a third-floor window of the Bohemian Chancellory in Prague (now the Czech Republic). This "Second Defenestration (going out of a window) of Prague" was the spark that set off the Thirty Years' War, one of the most destructive conflicts in history.

By the way, the Catholics who were defenestrated all survived their 70 foot fall. One man, a secretary, was later made a noble and christened "Baron von Hohenfall," or the Baron of Highfall.
